THE SMOKE THAT THUNDERS

Straddling the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe, Victoria Falls is one of the most spectacular natural wonders of the world. Known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya—“The Smoke That Thunders”—this UNESCO World Heritage Site is the largest sheet of falling water on Earth, stretching over 1.7 kilometers wide and plunging more than 100 meters into the gorge below.

The sheer power and beauty of the falls make it a bucket-list destination, but Victoria Falls offers much more than just breathtaking views. Thrill-seekers can try white-water rafting on the Zambezi River, bungee jumping from the iconic bridge, or swimming in the famous Devil’s Pool at the edge of the falls. For those who prefer a slower pace, sunset cruises along the Zambezi offer stunning scenery and wildlife sightings, including hippos, crocodiles, and elephants.

The surrounding national parks are teeming with wildlife, making Victoria Falls an excellent base for both adventure and safari. The towns of Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe) and Livingstone (Zambia) provide a range of accommodations from luxury lodges to boutique stays, ensuring comfort after a day of exploration.

Victoria Falls is not only a natural wonder but also a gateway to some of Southern Africa’s greatest safari destinations, including Chobe in Botswana and Hwange in Zimbabwe.
